Take a look at this brilliant video showcasing the fantastic work the SVP team undertook at Beighton Marsh. A rather imposing and overgrown hedge was clearly in need of some care and attention, and the team turned to hedge laying – a traditional countryside craft – to restore it.

Hedgelaying involves partially cutting and bending young trees and shrubs to create a dense, living fence. At Beighton Marsh, individual stems were carefully thinned to chest height before a pleacher cut was used. This technique allows stems to be bent from the base and woven back into the hedge, creating a strong, interlinked structure.

The result is a traditionally laid hedge that not only looks great, but also improves safety and, in this case, opened up excellent views across the surrounding countryside. Historically, laid hedges provided effective stock boundaries and they continue to play an important role today, offering valuable habitat and shelter for wildlife, particularly ground-nesting birds.
