Members of the Steel Valley Project volunteer team enjoyed a well-deserved night off to celebrate last week.  Nominated for the Stocksbridge Town Council Annual Citizens Award, the team were invited to the Stocksbridge Town Hall where they were presented with a certificate and a cheque for £100 by The Mayor, Councillor Mark Whittaker, for their involvement in providing environmental and conservation improvements to the local community. Cllr Whittaker highly praised the work the team did, commenting on how much they contributed to improving green spaces and the countryside locally, as well as the incredible dedication of the team who work outside in all weathers and create a better environment for all to enjoy.

The Steel Valley Project has worked with many volunteers over the years, and currently a core group of 20 volunteers support the project on a regular basis. The project would be unable to carry out the work it does without the commitment of these volunteers. No two days are the same when volunteering and may include clearing vegetation on pathways, building new steps, stiles or gates, creating natural flood management structures such as leaky dams or dams as well as looking after local habitats for wildlife.

Tom Newman, General Manager at Steel Valley project commented “We’re so grateful for the hard work and commitment from our amazing volunteers. They make a huge difference to our local area, improving local parks and countryside for people and wildlife. We couldn’t carry out our work without them generously giving up their time to work with us. It’s great for them to receive recognition of their work from Stocksbridge Town Council.”

The Steel Valley Project are always looking to expand its volunteering team, so if you are interested in joining the team and making a positive impact on the local community and environment as well as joining a sociable team whilst enjoying the outdoors  then please contact us on info@steelvalleyproject.org  or call  0114 28308804 to arrange a taster day or for more information.
