To celebrate 175 years of steelworks in the Stocksbridge valley, Liberty Steel, Fox Valley shopping, Stocksbridge & District History Society and the Steel Valley project are planning a heritage event which will take place on the 2nd and 3rd November at Fox Valley shopping centre.
As part of the celebrations, we’re looking for people who were involved in a tree planting ceremony 29 years ago to get in touch.
The original ceremony took place on Stocksbridge steelworks land back in April 1988 to commemorate the launch of the Steel Valley Project.
Local school children, along with senior management from the steelworks and community representatives planted saplings and sowed wild flower meadow seeds to regenerate banking above the steelworks.
Project Manager, Tom Newman, said “as part of the 175 years celebration we would like to hold a commemorative tree planting ceremony and include as many of the original people from 1988 as possible”.
If you recognise yourself in one of the photographs on this blog post or remember being part of the school trip which visited the steelworks to plant trees, we’d love to hear from you via email info@steelvalleyproject.org before Wednesday 25 October 2017.
The following link shows a picture of the valley back in 1988, along with one of the valley in 2017 – just drag the arrows in the centre of the picture left and right to see full images of each year.
