SVP successfully secured funding from the Stocksbridge Town Council Participatory Budget to enhance the All Wheels Park at Oxley Park with new landscaping and tree planting. The project began with the removal of overgrown vegetation, including cherry laurel, rhododendron, and dense undergrowth. The mounds for the All Wheels Park were then shaped, and wildflower meadow turf composed of 34 UK-native species including flowers such as Yarrow, Clover, Campions, Vetch and Birdsfoot Trefoil, as well as native grasses, was laid down.
This blend of grasses not only stabilizes the soil but also provides a thriving environment for wildlife, with flowering plants offering vital food and shelter for insects, amphibians, small mammals, and birds. The meadow requires no chemical treatments, artificial fertilizers, or frequent mowing, making it a sustainable and beneficial habitat for local ecosystems.
Additionally, native trees such as Sessile Oak, Rowan, Silver Birch, Alder, and Field Maple were planted around the children’s play area, enhancing the park’s green space. The impact of the planting will be more evident in the spring and summer, but the early improvements are already visible, showing a revitalised park and a more welcoming environment for the community.
